This hotel was badly affected by the tsunami. At the time of writing it is not expected to open for at least two years.

Yala Safari

Yala Village Hotel, Yala (T)
This hotel is close to the beach and also ideally situated for game viewing in Ruhuna National Park (Yala West). Cottages are in clusters and residents are driven to the restaurant by jeep.

Yala Village

Lighthouse Hotel, near Galle (L)
A wonderfully stylish hotel designed by Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. The 60 rooms (and 3 suites) are spacious and attractive and the bathrooms are superb with Jacuzzi bath and separate shower and toilet. Facilities include restaurant, café, bar, pool, beauty salon, spa and Ayurvedic centre. You could easily forget that there is also a very nice beach on the hotel’s doorstep. Galle is just 2 km away so can easily be visited.

The Dutch House, Galle (L, H, B)
Accommodation is in just four suites in this colonial home built in 1712 (for a Dutch East India Admiral) on a hill overlooking the harbour. Guests indulge in space and privacy, surrounded by period features. The house has a large garden and a great swimming pool on the side of the hill. Charming for small weddings.

The Dutch House

The Sun House, Galle (T, H, B)
The nearby ‘sister resort’ of the Dutch House also offers exclusive and stylish accommodation, library, a delightful garden and swimming pool.

The Sun House

Closenberg, Galle (M)
A conveniently located, friendly hotel. It does have some colonial rooms but they are huge and dark so we generally offer the newer rooms with their good views across the bay.

Closenberg

Palm Paradise Cabanas, Tangalle (S)
Palm Paradise offers simple accommodation in 22 stilted cabanas scattered around a spacious palm grove next to a secluded beach on the southern coast. The outdoor restaurant offers traditional Sri Lankan food. If you enjoy simple pleasures this is an excellent place to relax.

Palm Paradise

Coral Gardens, Hikkaduwa (T)
The Coral Gardens Hotel is probably the best in this area and has an excellent PADI dive centre. It is a large hotel with a wide range of facilities. Hikkaduwa is one of the most popular beaches and there are lots of local cafés and craft shops. It is regarded as best for SCUBA diving as there is a coral sanctuary (fishing banned) just off the coast. Diving is only offered during the high season (November to April).

Coral Gardens

Saman Villas, Bentota (L, B)
This resort is perched on a rocky headland between two beaches. The atmosphere is tranquil and the views magnificent. The luxuriously furnished air-conditioned villas include open-air bathroom, veranda, TV and CD player. Facilities include swimming pool, fitness centre, spa, and a choice of restaurants and bars.

Saman Villas

Taj Exotica, Bentota (L)
This is a large deluxe hotel offering comfortable, good quality rooms and a wide range of facilities including Ayurveda. Water sports (including diving) are offered at another hotel nearby.

Taj Exotica

Club Villa, Bentota (T, B)
A small hotel offering guesthouse atmosphere. The hotel is built around a Bawa cottage in the Dutch style. It has spacious and stylish air-conditioned rooms. There is a large garden with good sized swimming pool and access to the beach is through the garden and across the railway line. Fortunately, there are not too many trains per day to disturb what is otherwise a very tranquil spot.

Club Villa

Kosgoda Beach Resort, Kosgoda (M)
A delightful, smaller hotel in a superb position with a beach on one side and a lagoon on the other. The air-conditioned cottages have bath gardens and facilities include a swimming pool, restaurant and bar. This hotel was damaged in the tsunami and at the time of writing is closed. Please ask us for up to date information.
