Helga’s Folly, Kandy (M, H)
I’m not sure whether to describe this ‘folly’ as a hotel or a homestay. It is a very large family home and Helga normally joins her guests for dinner. She does not welcome groups in order to keep the experience personal and exclusive. It is an eccentric place and will appeal to some people. Rooms have views across Kandy and there is a swimming pool and garden..

Centauria Tourist Hotel, near Uda Walawe (M)
A visit to Uda Walawe National Park almost guarantees wild elephant sightings. It is possible to visit the park as a day trip from the west coast but it you are passing through then the Centauria is the logical place to stay. The hotel overlooks a lake and the rooms are comfortable. There is also an Ayurvedic centre and a swimming pool in the gardens.
