A large and
very populous state with India’s most revered river, the
Ganges, running through it. U P contains many impressive
temples and monuments - Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist. The most
well known of these is, of course, the Taj Mahal at Agra
within easy reach of Delhi. The holy Hindu city of Varanasi
and the ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath are situated in
eastern U P.
Agra is a typically busy
North Indian city and the home of the Taj Mahal,
generally considered to be the world’s most beautiful
building. The Taj as it is affectionately known, was
built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial to
his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is not
only symmetrically perfect, but the detail is exquisite.
The white marble is inlaid with intricate designs in
semi-precious coloured stone. Other sites to visit in
Agra include Agra Fort and Itimad-ud-Daulah (the Baby
Taj).
Not far from Agra is the magnificent fortified deserted
city of Fatehpur Sikri. Built by Emperor Akbar in the
16th century, it was only occupied for about 16 years before
being abandoned because no-one had considered the water
supply when creating it! Definitely worth a visit.

Varanasi, one of the holiest places in India, is built on
the banks of the sacred river Ganges. It is the ancient city
of Shiva, where pilgrims come to bathe in the holy waters.
There has been a settlement here for more than 2000 years.
The city is famous for its numerous ghats (steps down to the
river), where everyday life takes place. They are best
viewed from a boat on the river in the early morning light.
