The flat and fertile state of Punjab
is often referred to as the bread basket of India because
the Punjabi farmers produce almost 25% of India’s wheat and
33% of its milk. The Punjab, home of the Sikhs, was divided
at Independence and has since been further divided. The
Punjab Hills, part of the Himalayan foothills, are now in
the state of Himachal Pradesh. The scenery of H P is
spectacular and its capital, Shimla (Simla), is India’s best
known hill station.
The main attraction of this busy Punjabi city is the
beautiful Golden Temple. Amritsar was founded in 1577 by
Guru Ram Das and is the centre of the Sikh religion.

The hill station of Shimla was where the British Raj
moved during the hot summers. They built their houses in a
style to remind them of home. Visitors are sure to enjoy the
spectacular backdrop and the clean, crisp air of Shimla. The
toy train journey with its 103 tunnels is another very good
reason to visit this hill station.
